The quiet Tafawa Balewa community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State was on Monday morning thrown into confusion after residents woke up to the shocking discovery of a lifeless body.
The corpse of a middle-aged man was found lying near the gate of Township Primary School in the area, sparking fear and tension among locals.
According to eyewitnesses, it was the first time such a gruesome incident would occur in the community. A resident, Johnson Nyam, told reporters that the man was not known in the area, suggesting that he might have been killed elsewhere and dumped at the school gate.
Nyam explained that he was heading to work when he noticed a large crowd and police vehicles stationed at the scene. On approaching, he saw the lifeless man, with some bystanders claiming the incident must have occurred overnight.
“When I approached the place, I saw a man lying down, and some people were saying that it happened in the night. However, nobody knows exactly what happened to the man, but he was not alive,” Nyam said.
He further revealed that upon closer observation, strange substances were seen coming out of the victim’s mouth and nose, raising suspicions that the man may have been poisoned.
As of press time, the Plateau State Police Command was yet to release an official statement on the discovery. However, a police source who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed that the body had been evacuated to a mortuary, while investigations are ongoing to uncover the man’s identity and the circumstances surrounding his death.
