The Osun State Government has returned to the Supreme Court, accusing the Federal Government of reneging on a negotiated settlement regarding the release of local government allocations.
Kolapo Alimi, Commissioner for Information, revealed in an interview with Punch that the state had earlier withdrawn a similar case before the apex court after both parties reached an agreement. However, he alleged that the Federal Government failed to honour its promise to release the funds.
Alimi explained that despite interventions from monarchs, the Nigerian Bar Association, and other stakeholders, the impasse remained unresolved. According to him, the state had no option but to seek judicial interpretation to secure the salaries and entitlements of workers and citizens being denied their due.
He dismissed speculations linking the withheld allocations to the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy, stressing that funds could still be remitted into council accounts managed by public servants, not politicians.
Meanwhile, Governor Ademola Adeleke has reportedly been sourcing alternative funds since February to ensure local government workers are not left unpaid.
Local council secretariats across Osun remain closed since February 17 amid the ongoing tussle between PDP and APC factions over control of councils.
