The controversy over local government fund management in Osun State has intensified, as rival factions of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and the APC present sharply different narratives.
ALGON chairman aligned with the PDP, Sarafadeen Awotunde, accused the previous APC-led councils of violating the Local Government Finance Law. He claimed council accounts were allegedly operated with illegal political signatories, instead of authorised Directors of Finance and Administration.
Awotunde further alleged that while workers’ salaries were unpaid, funds were allegedly channelled to individuals whose tenures had expired following court rulings. According to him, any financial action taken without a valid mandate is null and void, warning that banks involved could also be culpable.
However, the APC-backed ALGON chairman, Abiodun Idowu, dismissed the allegations, insisting that councils followed due process in opening and managing their accounts. He maintained that all financial procedures complied strictly with statutory regulations.
The dispute, which follows claims of fund diversion raised in the Osun Assembly, continues to raise questions about accountability, legality, and transparency in local government administration.
