Osun Assembly Passes Gunshot Victims Care Bill to Save Lives, Protect Health Workers

The Osun State House of Assembly has passed the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Bill, 2025, aimed at ensuring that gunshot victims across the state receive immediate medical attention without the usual requirement of a police report or initial deposit.

A member of the Assembly representing Ife Central State Constituency, Hon. Abiola Awoyeye, disclosed this in a statement following the passage of the bill on October 21, 2025.

Awoyeye said the legislation would not only save lives but also protect hospitals and medical personnel from harassment and intimidation while carrying out emergency duties.

“The bill seeks to bring an end to the rejection of gunshot victims in the state. It marks a major step in promoting public safety and upholding the sanctity of human life, as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended),” he stated.

He explained that the new law creates a life-saving framework that removes unnecessary bureaucracy in emergency medical care, ensuring that victims receive prompt attention regardless of circumstances.

“Every human life, regardless of the situation, deserves a fair chance to survive. That is the spirit behind this bill,” Awoyeye added.

The bill also includes provisions that shield doctors and hospitals from intimidation or legal risks when treating gunshot victims without prior police clearance.

Residents and medical professionals across the state have reportedly welcomed the legislation, describing it as a progressive and humane step by the Assembly.

“This initiative reflects government responsiveness to citizens’ safety and welfare,” the statement noted, adding that it will help end the recurring cases of hospitals refusing to treat gunshot victims for fear of being victimised by law enforcement agencies.

With the passage of this bill, Osun State joins other states that have enacted similar laws to safeguard lives and protect healthcare workers in emergency situations.

Awoyeye said the new bill aligns with other key legislations recently passed by the Assembly, including the Osun State Sports Commission Establishment Bill, 2025, the Osun State Start-up Bill, 2025, and the Osun State Communal Crisis Management and Peacebuilding Bill, 2025.

The Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Bill, 2025, now awaits the assent of Governor Ademola Adeleke to become law.
