The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) has strongly criticised Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, over the continued shutdown of Onitsha Main Market, insisting traders have the right to observe sit-at-home.
The market has remained closed all week after Soludo ordered a one-week shutdown, citing traders’ compliance with Monday sit-at-home protests. The directive triggered protests that later escalated into unrest, prompting the governor to warn of a possible indefinite closure.
Reacting, BRGIE Prime Minister Ogechukwu Nkere described the move as unjust and punitive against innocent traders. He argued that traders are exercising their constitutional right to freedom of expression, including voluntarily observing sit-at-home in solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu.
Nkere denied claims that BRGIE or its affiliates forced traders to comply, stressing that participation was purely voluntary. He further likened the sit-at-home action to historical civil disobedience movements, referencing India’s independence struggle under Mahatma Gandhi.
Meanwhile, the development has continued to generate mixed reactions, with IPOB urging traders to ignore the governor’s directive and declaring a South-East-wide sit-at-home on February 2.
