Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to stop speaking negatively about their country, insisting that the international image of Nigeria has shifted from being tagged the “most corrupt nation” to being viewed as a land of opportunities.
Mrs. Tinubu made this statement during her two-day working visit to Gombe State, while addressing leaders and residents at the palace of the Emir of Akko, HRH Alhaji Umar Muhammad Atiku, on Thursday, October 2, 2025.
“Nigeria Is the Next Destination”
The First Lady stressed that Nigeria is no longer globally branded as the most corrupt country, a label that previously dented its image.
“Calling on us as Nigerians, stop badmouthing your nation. Gone are the days when they say Nigeria is the most corrupt country. You won’t hear that again,” she declared.
According to her, international perception is shifting positively:
“Even when I go abroad, when they hear you’re from Nigeria, everybody’s interested. They want to come to Nigeria. Nigeria is the next destination,” she added.
Praise for Gombe’s Beauty
Mrs. Tinubu also expressed admiration for Gombe State’s natural scenery, comparing it to the landscapes of the London countryside.
“Your landscape is beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like that. You see that in the London countryside, but I’m seeing it here in Gombe and in other states too,” she noted.
She urged Nigerians to embrace national pride and believe in the country’s potential, pointing to its vast human capital and unique natural beauty as strengths to build upon.
Commitment to National Growth
The First Lady linked her appeal to the federal administration’s programmes in security, education, and grassroots development, stressing the important role traditional and religious leaders must play in shaping citizens’ values and outlook.
Speaking on her personal drive, she said:
“I’m 65 years old now, I pray I live long. But I’m working so hard so that when my husband finishes his tenure, me too I can walk around safely. That is what drives me.”
Conferred Traditional Title
During the visit, Mrs. Tinubu was also conferred with the traditional title of Sarauniyar Yaki (Queen Warrior) of Akko Emirate by the Lamido Akko, in recognition of her commitment to protecting the interests of vulnerable groups across Nigeria.
