Former presidential aspirant Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to manipulate legal and institutional mechanisms to weaken opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. Speaking via a statement, the PDP stalwart vowed that no legal maneuver could derail Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.
Olawepo-Hashim drew parallels with the Abacha era, stressing that democracy survived despite attempts to consolidate power under one ruler. He warned against authoritarian tendencies, citing Zaire under Mobutu Sese Seko as a cautionary tale of prolonged one-man rule.
The former aspirant also raised concerns about selective political party registration, alleging that some associations aligned with the ruling party received interim recognition while others stalled. He called on Nigerians and the international community to remain vigilant, urging lawful accountability measures such as asset freezes and travel restrictions against individuals undermining democratic norms. Olawepo-Hashim reaffirmed that Nigeria’s commitment to multiparty democracy, enshrined by the nation’s founding fathers, will be preserved.
