The Ogun State Government has officially announced the commencement of commercial passenger flights at the newly constructed Gateway International Airport (GWI) along the Ilisan-Iperu Remo road, starting October 7, 2025.
In a statement released on Friday, Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Information and Strategy, revealed that Value Jet Airline has been authorized to operate flights every Tuesday and Thursday on the GWI-Abuja route.
According to the flight schedule, the airline will depart GWI at 8:30 am and arrive in Abuja at 9:45 am. The return flight will leave Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 4:00 pm, landing at GWI by 5:15 pm.
Tickets for the flights will be available for purchase starting September 25 through online platforms, travel agents, and ticket desks at the Gateway International Airport.
Akinmade emphasized that this development will provide travelers in Ogun, Ibadan, Lagos, and Abuja with new air travel options while enjoying exceptional facilities at the new airport.
Naija News reports that Governor Dapo Abiodun had previously announced that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) granted Aerodrome Operational Permits to the airport in August, following comprehensive inspections and audits.
Abiodun described this certification as a “historic milestone not only for Ogun State but for Nigeria,” highlighting that it marks the first time a newly constructed airport in the country has received such approval under current regulatory standards.
The NCAA has also commended the airport as a model for future aviation infrastructure in Nigeria, awarding it an Aerodrome Reference Code of 3C and an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) Category 6 rating.
Additionally, the governor disclosed that a global logistics firm has committed to operating two weekly cargo flights from London to the new facility.
“We would also have flights from here to Abuja and Port Harcourt as start-up,” Abiodun added, emphasizing that the airport has been designated as an alternate landing site for Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
Abiodun expressed confidence that the facility will become a catalyst for trade, investment, and tourism in the region.
“With world-class infrastructure, international connectivity, and a strategic location, the Gateway International Airport will raise the bar for air travel in Nigeria and serve as a proud symbol of Ogun State’s progress,” the governor stated.
He further noted that NCAA officials had informed him that the facility would now serve as “a benchmark for what an airport should be in Nigeria.”
