When names like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso stand together in a street protest against INEC, it stops being ordinary party drama.
It becomes a warning sign.
Fresh reports show that top opposition figures including Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, David Mark, and others joined the ADC-backed #OccupyINEC protest in Abuja, accusing the electoral body of undermining democracy through its handling of the ADC leadership crisis. The demonstration came after INEC’s disputed derecognition of the David Mark-led structure, which has now triggered a wider national backlash.
And that is why this matters.
Because this is no longer just about ADC.
This is about trust.
If major opposition leaders are already publicly accusing the country’s electoral umpire of bias before the 2027 election cycle even fully begins, then Nigeria is heading toward a very dangerous political climate.
That is the deeper issue.
Democracy does not only collapse when ballots are stolen.
Sometimes, it begins to collapse when too many citizens stop believing the referee is neutral.
And once that trust begins to die, every future election becomes vulnerable to suspicion, resistance, and crisis.
Of course, INEC supporters and ruling party voices will say the commission is only obeying legal and procedural realities. Some groups have even warned the ADC not to politicise what they call an internal party dispute.
But that is precisely why this protest is politically explosive.
Because what the opposition is trying to frame is not just “party victimhood.”
They are trying to frame INEC itself as part of the battlefield.
And if that narrative gains public acceptance, the consequences could be massive.
Because by 2027, Nigerians may not only be asking who will win.
They may be asking something even more dangerous:
Can this election still be trusted at all?
That is why #OccupyINEC is not just a protest.
It is a political alarm bell.
And whether Nigerians agree with ADC or not, one thing is now clear:
the battle for 2027 has already started — and it is no longer only about candidates. It is now about the credibility of the system itself.
