Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s frequent foreign travels, alleging that Nigeria has been left without firm leadership amid worsening national challenges.

In a statement titled “A Distressing January for Nigeria”, Obi claimed the President spent most of January outside the country while Nigerians battled rising insecurity, kidnappings, power grid collapses, and economic hardship. According to him, farmers remain unable to return to their farms, schools are shut due to insecurity and strikes, and electricity supply continues to deteriorate.

Obi argued that Tinubu appears more focused on international engagements and political calculations than on urgent domestic issues. He further alleged that the President mainly returns to Nigeria to receive defectors into the All Progressives Congress (APC) before travelling abroad again.

Calling on the President and the ruling party to shift priorities, Obi urged leaders to focus on governance, security, education, and infrastructure rather than early campaign strategies. He stressed that Nigeria’s deepening crises require hands-on leadership and immediate solutions, not prolonged absences from the country.
