The Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed its ruling on an application from Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is seeking a transfer to the National Hospital for medical treatment.
During Friday’s hearing, Justice James Omotosho paused the case after hearing arguments from both the defense and prosecution teams.
Kanu’s lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), submitted a medical report from Prof. Austin Agaji, advocating for the court to authorize his transfer for further treatment.
In opposition, prosecution counsel Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) argued that the Department of State Services (DSS) had complied with previous court orders allowing Kanu access to relatives, preferred doctors, and legal representation.
Awomolo also noted that the DSS had permitted Kanu to visit facilities of his choice. He revealed that the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has formed a seven-member team of experts to independently evaluate Kanu’s health status, given the conflicting claims surrounding it.
He requested the court to allow the panel a week to submit its report.
While the DSS lawyer expressed concerns that transferring Kanu to the National Hospital could pose security risks, he characterized claims regarding Kanu’s deteriorating health as exaggerated.
Conversely, Kanu’s counsel insisted that his client’s condition necessitated urgent medical attention.
Justice Omotosho has reserved his decision, stating that he will deliver a ruling after reviewing the submissions and the new developments involving the NMA panel.
