The Presidency has firmly stated that Nigeria is progressing under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, refuting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s assertions regarding widespread hunger in the country.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, emphasized the administration’s pride in its achievements thus far. He attributed many of the ongoing challenges to the years of governance by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), during which Atiku served as Vice President.
Atiku recently expressed concerns that two years into President Tinubu’s administration, there is still no clear indication that the government can effectively tackle the issues of hunger and poverty affecting many Nigerians.
“The level of hunger in the country is unacceptable, especially among the underprivileged,” Atiku stated. He criticized the government’s reforms, asserting that food insecurity remains a daily reality for many.
In response, Onanuga dismissed Atiku’s comments, labeling them as “cheap talk” and accused the former Vice President of being disconnected from the positive developments occurring in Nigeria. He described Atiku’s comparison of Nigeria’s situation to historical revolutions as misleading.
Onanuga’s statement highlighted recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), indicating a decline in headline inflation for five consecutive months and a record trade surplus. He noted that foreign exchange reserves are nearing $42 billion, a significant increase from $32 billion when President Tinubu took office.
“Under President Tinubu, Nigeria is witnessing unprecedented revenue growth,” Onanuga added, stating that states are now able to pay salaries and fund social projects effectively.
He concluded by asserting that Nigeria is indeed moving in the right direction, while Atiku and his party remain fixated on past failures. “Nigerians can see and feel the positive changes taking place across the nation,” he said.
