Nigeria imported ₦12.8 trillion worth of petrol between August 2024 and October 2025, according to new data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). The factsheet shows the country brought in 15.4 billion litres of PMS within 15 months, despite growing pressure to rely on local refining.
The breakdown reveals September 2024 as the month with the highest import volume at 1.52 billion litres, while local supply during the same period totaled 7.2 billion litres, entirely from the Dangote Refinery.
Despite increased output, experts say Nigeria is still unable to stop fuel importation due to an insufficiently diversified refining sector. Dangote Refinery also raised concerns over vessel-clearance delays affecting operations and urged regulators to implement the “Nigeria First” supply policy effectively.
