Nigeria Must Combine AI, Local Intelligence and Community Security to Fight Insecurity – Prof Iwendi WarnsNigeria Must Combine AI, Local Intelligence and Community Security to Fight Insecurity – Prof Iwendi Warns

Professor Celestine Iwendi, Head of the Centre of Intelligence of Things at the University of Greater Manchester, has warned that Nigeria’s growing insecurity cannot be solved through traditional military force alone. Speaking on ARISE NEWS, the security expert said the country urgently needs a blended strategy powered by artificial intelligence, drones, real-time data systems, and community-based security units.

Iwendi stressed that Nigeria must build local protection structures—such as trained community police and commandos familiar with their terrain—rather than relying heavily on foreign support. He emphasized that modern security requires strong data collection, secure intelligence platforms, and predictive analytics to track criminal movements and prevent attacks before they occur.

He also urged collaboration with academic institutions and the retraining of Nigeria’s military in modern guerrilla and counter-terrorism tactics. According to him, Nigeria’s security challenges are solvable with the right mix of technology, local expertise, and community involvement.
