Nigeria Moves To Balance Tech Innovation And Data Privacy

Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to balancing innovation with strong data privacy protection, as emerging technologies continue to reshape the digital space.

Speaking at the National Data Privacy Summit in Abuja, the National Commissioner of the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, said innovation must go hand in hand with privacy safeguards. He noted that while Nigeria’s digital ecosystem is growing rapidly, protecting citizens’ personal data remains a top priority.

According to Olatunji, the NDPC is adopting bold and strategic approaches that encourage innovation without compromising privacy and security. He stressed that clarity in data governance is essential for sustainable digital growth.

Also speaking at the summit, the NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, said emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) present major opportunities for Nigeria’s economy but also raise concerns around personal rights and data security. He emphasised that public trust and ethical safeguards are critical for adoption.

Representing the Plateau State Governor, Dr. Bako Shurkuk added that emerging technologies, if properly managed, can drive sustainable economic development across Nigeria.
