Nigeria in Full-Blown Security Emergency: Peter Obi Demands Declaration of War on Insecurity

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised alarm over the rising wave of killings across Nigeria, warning that the nation is in the grip of a “full-blown security emergency.”

In a statement posted on his official 𝕏 handle on Sunday, Obi condemned recent attacks in Borno, Edo, Sokoto, and Katsina States, where over 100 people were killed within a single week.

In Borno, suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a bloody assault on Darul Jamal in Bama LGA, killing soldiers and civilians. In Katsina, bandits murdered six people and abducted over 130 during raids on Sabuwa communities.

Similarly, in Edo State, gunmen suspected to be kidnappers killed eight Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officials and abducted a Chinese expatriate in Okpella, Etsako East LGA.

Obi, while lamenting the spate of violence, wrote:

“Nigeria bleeds, needs a declaration of war on insecurity now. Bloody weekend: over 100 killed in Borno, Sokoto, Katsina, Edo.”

He stressed that these tragedies are not isolated incidents but evidence of a nationwide security collapse. Obi added that Nigeria’s casualty figures now rival those of war-torn nations, insisting that government must suspend all distractions and focus exclusively on restoring security.

“My deepest condolences go to the families of our fallen heroes. Their courage reminds us that we still have men and women willing to risk everything for our safety. Their killers must be apprehended swiftly,” Obi stated.

The former Anambra governor also criticised frequent foreign trips by government officials, arguing that leaders must remain at home to personally coordinate the war on insecurity.

“Junketing around the world while the country bleeds is denial. Investors won’t come into a war zone,” he warned.

Citing Somalia and Libya as cautionary examples, Obi urged urgent action to prevent Nigeria’s collapse, declaring that a “new Nigeria is possible” if insecurity is decisively crushed.
