Fresh figures from Ireland’s Department of Justice, Home Affairs, and Migration reveal that Nigeria has overtaken other nations as the leading source of asylum seekers in the country.
According to the report, Ireland recorded 1,164 new asylum applications in July 2025, a sharp decline compared to 1,735 in July 2024. Between January and July 2025, a total of 7,207 asylum applications were received, marking a 42 percent drop from 12,236 within the same period last year.
Nigeria topped the list with 1,083 asylum applications, followed by Pakistan (945), Somalia (933), Afghanistan (767), and Georgia (462).
The department noted significant progress in tackling Ireland’s asylum backlog. As of September 2024, the International Protection Office (IPO) had 23,863 pending cases, but by July 2025 the figure dropped to 18,323.
Additionally, there was an increase in resolved cases. 1,755 applications were concluded in July 2025, compared to 1,294 in July 2024. Officials stressed, however, that the statistics, extracted on August 8, remain operational and subject to change.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom continues to battle a record-high asylum crisis, with nearly 89,000 applications filed in the year leading to June 2025 and more than 224,000 pending cases.
