Nigeria and Colombia are moving closer to establishing direct flight connections aimed at boosting bilateral trade, cultural exchange, and diplomatic cooperation.
The development gained traction on Monday during a high-level meeting in Abuja between Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.
Márquez, who led a delegation of senior government, business, and diplomatic representatives, described aviation as a crucial pillar in strengthening ties.
“We met with aviation business leaders on the importance of starting direct flights to Colombia,” she explained.
She also highlighted shared historical links, referring to Nigeria as “the land of our ancestors,” while stressing the need for partnerships anchored on social justice, gender equality, and inclusivity.
President Tinubu assured the visiting delegation that Nigeria is prepared to fast-track agreements to make the plan a reality.
“In particular, the aviation agreement signed with Brazil can easily be replicated with Colombia, while further deepening diplomatic ties. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will ensure the process is accelerated,” Tinubu affirmed.
This comes on the heels of the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) signed between Nigeria and Brazil in August 2025, which paved the way for Nigerian carrier Air Peace to announce direct flights to Brasília later this year.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who chaired the Nigeria-Colombia bilateral forum, encouraged private investors to embrace the opportunity.
“The private sectors of both nations must seize these prospects and transform them into economic benefits. We cannot remain reliant on narrow exports,” he said.
