The Niger State Government has expressed deep concern over the kidnapping of pupils from St. Mary’s School in the Papiri area of Agwara Local Government. This was revealed in a statement signed by Alh. Abubakar Usman, Secretary to the Niger State Government, on Friday.
Officials are currently working to confirm the exact number of children abducted, as security agencies continue their efforts to understand the situation.
The government had previously received credible intelligence indicating rising security threats in parts of Niger North. In response, it ordered a halt to all construction work and directed all boarding schools in the affected areas to close temporarily for safety reasons.
Despite this, St. Mary’s School resumed classes without informing the government or obtaining approval, a decision that authorities claim endangered both pupils and staff.
The Government has urged school proprietors, community leaders, and stakeholders to strictly adhere to security advisories for public safety. The protection of lives, especially those of children, remains a top priority for the administration.
Security agencies have launched a full investigation and are conducting search-and-rescue operations to ensure the safe return of the pupils.
The state government is collaborating closely with all security units and will provide updates as new information becomes available.
Residents are encouraged to remain calm and assist security operatives with any useful information.
