Niger Assembly Raises Alarm Over Illegal Immigrants Fueling Illicit Mining Crisis

The Niger State House of Assembly has raised fresh concerns over the rising influx of undocumented immigrants involved in illicit mining across the state. Speaker Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, speaking during a visit by Assistant Comptroller General of Immigration (Zone D), Anthony Emeka Chikezie, said most illegal miners come from neighbouring African countries without proper documentation, worsening insecurity in the region.

Sarkindaji criticised the Immigration Service for being slow in curbing the trend and urged stricter border monitoring to reduce criminal activities linked to illegal mining sites. He assured the Assembly’s readiness to support the Service with resources to improve operations.

Earlier, ACG Chikezie appealed for legislative backing to address operational challenges such as lack of vehicles, office equipment, and adequate accommodation for personnel.
