Niger Assembly Approves Budget Cut, NIRS Chairman Reappointment & 2026 Budget Date

The Niger State House of Assembly on Tuesday received three major proposals from Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, all targeted at addressing fiscal pressures and strengthening governance. Deputy Speaker Hon. Afiniki Eunice Dauda read the correspondences during plenary.

Governor Bago submitted a revised 2025 budget, reducing the initial ₦1.55 trillion to ₦1.09 trillion due to significant underperformance in Capital Receipts, which originally accounted for 60% of total revenue. The amendment includes a 30% cut in projected Capital Receipts from ₦939.8 billion to ₦448.64 billion to correct fiscal imbalances affecting developmental plans.

The Assembly also unanimously approved the governor’s request to reappoint Mr. Mohammed Madami Etsu as Executive Chairman of the Niger State Internal Revenue Service (NIRS) for a second and final four-year term, effective January 5, 2026—citing his revenue-boosting reforms.

Bago further announced his intention to present the 2026 budget on December 12, 2025, noting delays caused by recent developments in the state.
