NERC Marks 20 Years of Power Sector Regulation

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced the celebration of its 20th Anniversary, marking two decades of regulating and reforming the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

In a statement released on Thursday, NERC described the milestone as an opportunity to reflect on its journey from inception to its current role in overseeing Nigeria’s power market — navigating through key phases such as the unbundling of the power sector, privatisation of major assets, and transition from the Interim Market to the Transition Electricity Market.

Established on October 31, 2005, under the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA) 2005 — now succeeded by the Electricity Act 2023 — the commission said it has remained at the heart of Nigeria’s electricity evolution.

“Over the past twenty years, the Commission has championed reforms that foster transparency, accountability, consumer protection, and sustainable growth across the sector,” the statement read.

NERC reiterated its commitment to driving continuous reforms aimed at improving service delivery, promoting competition, and ensuring reliable electricity for Nigerians.
