At least 51 people have been killed during violent anti-corruption protests in Nepal this week, according to police reports released on Friday. The unrest has led to a significant upheaval, resulting in the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and the imposition of a curfew by the army.
The protests erupted in response to a government ban on social media, rampant corruption, and poor governance. Among the deceased, at least 21 were protesters, primarily killed during a police crackdown on Monday.
In a dramatic turn of events, protesters set fire to the parliament building, prompting the military to take control of the streets. The army reported recovering over 100 firearms that were looted during the uprising, where demonstrators were seen wielding automatic weapons.
Police spokesman Binod Ghimire confirmed the death toll, stating, “51 people have died so far this week in the protests, including at least 21 protestors and three policemen.”

Additionally, more than 12,500 prisoners who escaped from various jails during the chaos are still on the run. Ghimire noted that approximately 13,500 inmates had escaped, with 12,533 still at large, while some have attempted to cross into India, where many have been apprehended by border forces.
