The National Assembly has enforced new security restrictions preventing senators, members of the House of Representatives, and their aides from accessing the long corridor in front of the office of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
Naija News gathered that the directive was contained in an internal memo issued on Thursday by the Office of the Serjeant-at-Arms at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja. The memo, signed by Brigadier-General Etido E. Ekpo (retd), and dated October 2, was addressed to the Chairman of Senate Services.
According to the memo, all lawmakers and aides are now barred from the White House lobby, the Senate Chamber gangway, and the corridor leading to Akpabio’s office.
The notice further instructed lawmakers to inform their aides and personal assistants, stressing that:
“All aides or personal assistants would not be allowed into the said corridor.”
This decision has sparked discussions within the legislative circle as it further tightens movement around the Senate leadership office.
Meanwhile, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has also hinted at fresh political realignments. Speaking in Owerri at the launch of the book “Ten Years of Impactful Leadership of the APC Administration in Nigeria” by Governor Hope Uzodimma, Akpabio disclosed that more governors from opposition parties are preparing to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to align with President Bola Tinubu.
Akpabio, who attended the event where President Tinubu also commissioned projects, urged the President to expect “a wave of defections” from opposition states in the coming months.
