Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of being vindictive and intolerant of opposition, alleging that he would go to any extent to trample on people’s rights.
Naija News reports that Effiong made this revelation during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday while reacting to the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, was suspended on March 6, 2025, over allegations of insubordination after she refused to change her designated seat during plenary. Despite her appeal, the Senate has refused to reinstate her, insisting that her suspension remains in force until the Court of Appeal rules on her case.
Effiong described the Senate’s action as unjust and politically motivated, stressing that the suspension had denied the people of Kogi Central effective representation.
“Akpabio is from my state, don’t forget he was governor for eight years. I know his antecedents. He doesn’t forgive, he is vindictive, and he doesn’t understand opposition. You don’t oppose Akpabio and get away with it. That is what is happening to Natasha now,” Effiong said.
He faulted the six-month suspension, arguing that it was excessive and baseless:
“This has gone beyond seat location. Why suspend someone for six months over a purported wrong seat? It does not make sense. For half a year, her constituents have been denied their voice in the Senate, deprived of bills, motions, and representation they duly deserve,” he added.
