Nasarawa Launches Statewide School Campaign Against Gender Violence & Climate Risks

The Nasarawa State Government has rolled out a major awareness campaign across public and private schools to tackle rising cases of gender-based violence and educate young people on climate change. Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Princess Dr. Margaret Elayo, said the initiative spans all 13 LGAs and aligns with the upcoming Climate Change Summit in honour of Governor Abdullahi Sule, recently named a Climate Change Ambassador in Nigeria.

Dr. Elayo stressed that while prayer offers comfort, only science-driven action can curb environmental degradation. She explained that climate change—once driven by natural forces—is now primarily caused by human activities since the 1800s, especially the burning of fossil fuels.

School outreaches have already been launched in Lafia, with plans for a state-wide debate on climate change. She also raised concerns about the silent trauma experienced by girls facing gender violence, urging them to speak out as the government intensifies interventions.
