A High Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has sentenced Saidu Idi to death by hanging for armed robbery and culpable homicide linked to a 2015 incident.
Delivering judgment on Monday, Chief Judge Aisha Muhammed-Usman found Idi guilty on two counts after an 11-year trial. He was, however, discharged on the charge of criminal conspiracy. The prosecution established that the victim, a herdsman, was shot dead before his valuables and money were taken in Kokona Local Government Area.
The Attorney-General of Nasarawa State, Isaac Danladi, described the verdict as a landmark decision, stressing that the case was heard thoroughly and without bias. He added that the ruling should serve as a strong deterrent to violent crime.
Defence counsel Chidi Okorie Kanu disagreed with the judgment and confirmed plans to appeal, citing alleged inconsistencies in witness testimonies. Despite this, the court ordered that justice be carried out in line with the law.
