NAFDAC Shuts Down Illegal Skincare Factory in Lagos Over Unsafe Whitening Products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down an unlicensed skincare production facility in Lagos, exposing the dangers of unsafe and unregulated cosmetic products in Nigeria.

The facility, identified as Shine Shine Skincare in Agege, was sealed following an enforcement raid that revealed substandard production practices and the manufacture of cosmetic products falsely marketed as “organic.”

Investigators discovered several unregistered and unsafe skin-lightening items, including:

  • Peeling White Scrub
  • Glass Scrub Wash
  • Antiaging Radiant Glow
  • 10X Customized Native Soap
  • 5D Instant Whitening Soap
  • Yellow Tone Whitening Body Cream
  • Exfoliation Soap
  • Customized Body Cream

According to NAFDAC, many of these products contained banned and harmful ingredients, including corticosteroid-based bleaching agents, which are linked to severe health risks such as:

  • Skin thinning
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Increased susceptibility to infections

The agency emphasized that the circulation of unregistered cosmetic products poses a major public health risk. Consumers are urged to always verify the regulatory approval status of skincare and personal care items before purchase and report suspicious products to NAFDAC.

Investigations into Shine Shine Skincare are still ongoing, with the possibility of legal sanctions and prosecution under Nigerian law.

This action highlights NAFDAC’s continued commitment to protecting public health and regulating Nigeria’s cosmetics and personal care industry.
