A tragic incident has occurred in Kasuwan-Garba town, Mariga LGA of Niger State, where a woman was burnt to death by a mob over alleged blasphemous remarks.
According to reports, the victim, a restaurant owner identified as Amaye, was interacting with a customer when the situation escalated. The customer jokingly proposed marriage to her, referencing the tradition of the Prophet. In response, she reportedly made comments deemed offensive to the Islamic faith.
The woman was initially taken to the palace of the District Head of Kasuwan-Garba, who handed her over to security operatives for investigation. However, before the matter could be properly handled, an angry mob overwhelmed the operatives, lynched her, and set her body ablaze.
Police Reaction
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun. He disclosed that the event took place on 30th August 2025, at about 2:00 pm.
“Unfortunately, it led to a mob attack, and the woman was set ablaze before the reinforcement of security teams could arrive at the scene,” Abiodun stated.
The police condemned the act of jungle justice, assuring that efforts are underway to track down and prosecute those responsible. The Command also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, stressing that sensitive issues must be handled in line with the law.
