The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, is currently recuperating in Abuja after taking ill, reliable sources from the Presidency have confirmed.
According to multiple officials who spoke to The PUNCH on Sunday, the 69-year-old minister is “indisposed” but receiving medical attention under close supervision at home. Contrary to speculations making the rounds, officials debunked reports suggesting that Edun suffered a stroke or was flown abroad for treatment.
“Yes, he’s indisposed. He’s sick, which is a bit serious, but it’s not a stroke,” a senior government official clarified. “He is still in his house here in Nigeria and being monitored by doctors. If further medical care is needed abroad, it will be considered, but for now, he remains home and is recovering.”
Another Presidency source reinforced that there are no plans to replace the minister despite his absence from public functions. “He is being attended to by Nigerian doctors and recovering gradually. If there’s a need for overseas care, it will be arranged, but that has not happened yet,” the source stated.
The Presidency also cleared the air regarding Edun’s absence from Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C. The team will now be led by the Central Bank Governor, Mr. Yemi Cardoso, with the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, joining the delegation.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that Edun “suddenly fell ill” but is currently recuperating. “Yes, he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. But he’s in Nigeria, resting and recovering,” Onanuga told The PUNCH on Sunday.
