A tragic incident rocked Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, on Sunday after a gunman stormed a Mormon church, killing one person, injuring several others, and setting the building on fire before being neutralized by police.
According to authorities, the suspect, a 40-year-old man from a nearby town, rammed his vehicle through the front doors of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before opening fire with an assault rifle on worshippers.
Police Chief William Renye confirmed that “hundreds of people were inside the church” at the time of the attack. Emergency responders rushed at least ten gunshot victims to the hospital, one of whom died.
The suspect also allegedly set parts of the church ablaze before being shot dead by law enforcement officers. Photos from the scene showed heavy smoke and emergency officials evacuating people on stretchers.
President Donald Trump reacted via his Truth Social platform, describing the shooting as “horrendous” and suggesting it appeared to be “yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America.”
The FBI has joined local authorities in investigating the attack, with officials warning that more victims could still be found once the scene is fully secured.
Attorney General Pam Bondi and other officials expressed condolences to the victims’ families, while stressing that violence in places of worship remains a cowardly act.
