A heartbreaking tragedy has struck off the coast of Mauritania, where a migrant boat capsized, claiming the lives of 69 people. 💔
Officials reported that the accident occurred when migrants on board, spotting lights from a nearby town, rushed to one side of the boat, causing it to overturn. The vessel had reportedly left The Gambia a week earlier with about 160 people, including Senegalese and Gambian nationals.
The Mauritanian coast guard managed to rescue 17 survivors, but many remain unaccounted for. This tragedy adds to the rising toll of migrants who risk their lives attempting dangerous sea crossings in search of better opportunities.
According to Caminando Fronteras, over 10,000 migrants died at sea in 2024 while trying to reach Spain — underscoring the deadly risks of these journeys.
