Nollywood actress Mary Njoku has sparked heated conversation after criticizing how Nigerians use social media, questioning if empathy has been lost in the race for clout and viral fame.
In a lengthy Instagram post, the actress and mother of three lamented how tragedies and human suffering are increasingly turned into entertainment content, skits, and trending videos rather than moments for reflection and compassion.
Njoku contrasted Nigeria’s social media culture with the global use of digital platforms for activism, justice, and community-building. According to her, Nigerians often focus more on noise, virality, and instant fame than on humanity.
“Pain is now broadcast like entertainment, suffering is packaged as skits. What are we becoming if every tragedy must first become a trending video?” she asked.
She urged Nigerians to pause and reflect before posting online, warning that the hunger for clout is stripping people of their compassion.
“Before you type, before you record, before you upload, STOP and ask yourself: Am I amplifying humanity, or am I stripping it away?” Njoku concluded.
