French President Emmanuel Macron has strongly criticised the United States over visa restrictions imposed on former European Commissioner Thierry Breton and four other European officials. In a post on X, Macron described the measures as “intimidation and coercion” targeting Europe’s digital sovereignty.
He argued that the EU’s digital regulations were democratically adopted by the European Parliament and the Council and intended to ensure fair competition, not to target any third country. Macron insisted that Europe’s digital laws should remain free from external influence, emphasizing that what is illegal offline should also be illegal online.
The French President pledged to work with the European Commission and EU partners to defend regulatory autonomy and digital independence, warning that such US actions threaten Europe’s strategic interests and its ability to govern its digital space.
