Lionel Messi Reflects On His Career, Retirement Thoughts, At America Business Summit

Global football icon Lionel Messi has offered a candid glimpse into his future, admitting that while the thought of retirement is beginning to surface, his primary focus remains on savoring his final years on the pitch.

The Inter Miami captain made these revelations as the closing guest at the prestigious America Business Summit in Miami, sharing the stage with global figures including FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

When questioned about his legacy, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner expressed that he has not yet dedicated much time to such reflections. “It’s not something I’ve thought about or worried about,” Messi stated. “When I retire, as the years go by, obviously I’ll value everything I did… But today is the time to keep enjoying myself and to keep playing.”

The 38-year-old maestro was honored by Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who presented him with a ceremonial key to the city. Messi used the opportunity to thank the community for their “spectacular” welcome since his arrival in 2023.

He unequivocally labeled Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar as the pinnacle of his storied career. “As a player, winning the World Cup, I think it’s the best. After the World Cup, you can’t ask for anything more,” he affirmed.

Despite his incredible MLS season, where he finished as top scorer with 29 goals and 19 assists, Messi acknowledged the inevitable. “Unfortunately, at some point, it ends,” he said, hinting at a gradual transition into a new chapter of his life. His immediate focus, however, is on leading Inter Miami against Nashville SC in a crucial MLS playoff game this Saturday.
