Lagos Unveils Ambulance Bikes to Beat Traffic and Save Lives Faster

The Lagos State Government has unveiled 10 newly acquired Motorcycle Response Unit (MRU) ambulances, popularly called “Ambulance Bikes”, to improve emergency medical response and strengthen pre-hospital care across the state.

The bikes, officially handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) on Tuesday, are specially designed to cut through Lagos’ notorious traffic gridlock, access narrow streets, and reach patients in hard-to-reach areas within minutes.

Equipped to Deliver Life-Saving Care

At the launch ceremony, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, described the project as a bold and innovative step in emergency care for a mega city like Lagos.

“These Ambu-bikes are Lagos’ response to our unique traffic situation. They will reach patients faster than conventional ambulances and deliver immediate treatment,” she said.

According to her, each 220cc superbike is fully fitted with medical tools including sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes, pulse oximeters, nebulizer machines, glucometers, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), oxygen kits, radios, sirens, and protective gear for the riders.

“Our paramedics can administer CPR, control bleeding, give IV fluids, and stabilize patients on the spot before an ambulance arrives,” Ogunyemi explained.

Prompt Approval Under THEMES+ Agenda

She further commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for promptly approving the project under the THEMES+ development agenda.

“Once the proposal was presented with data, Mr. Governor immediately approved it. This is another first in Nigeria; Lagos once again is setting the pace,” she noted proudly.

Game-Changer for Emergency Response

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, emphasized that the bikes will drastically reduce response times.

“Bikes beat traffic, paramedics intervene immediately, and ambulances take over for evacuation. This reduces mortality rates and increases survival chances,” Ogboye said.

Director of LASAMBUS, Mrs. Beatrice Makinde, hailed the innovation as a “game-changer” for emergency services, stressing that the MRU units will help save countless lives by ensuring quicker intervention during emergencies.
