Lagos Targets 10.5m Children in Measles-Rubella Vaccine Drive

The Lagos State Government has announced the launch of a statewide Measles–Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign aimed at protecting over 10.5 million children from preventable diseases.

The exercise, scheduled for January 20 to 31, will cover children aged nine months to 14 years across schools, markets, religious centres and primary healthcare facilities. Health officials say the campaign is designed to close immunity gaps and reduce the spread of measles and rubella.

Speaking during a media briefing, the State Immunisation Programme Coordinator, Dr Matthew Akinpelu, said the initiative would help curb Congenital Rubella Syndrome, which affects thousands of Nigerian children yearly. He described both diseases as highly contagious and dangerous, especially for children and pregnant women.

UNICEF and Lagos health officials emphasised the need for public trust, accurate information and community participation to ensure the campaign’s success, stressing that vaccination remains a proven tool for saving lives.
