Lagos Moves to End Ebute Metta Flooding With Rail Drainage

The Lagos State Government has launched a major infrastructure plan to tackle persistent flooding in Ebute Metta with the construction of the Carter Railway Drainage Channel.

The stormwater project is designed to permanently address seasonal flooding that has disrupted homes, businesses and railway operations in the area for decades. The drainage channel will move excess runoff through the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) corridor and discharge into the Iponri confluence along Western Avenue.

Unveiled at a stakeholders’ meeting held inside the NRC compound, the project has already been awarded and construction is set to begin soon.

According to the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the project—officially named Carter Railway Channel (System 4)—will feature a reinforced concrete drainage system stretching from Murtala Muhammed Way, passing through the railway corridor and terminating at Iponri.

Director of Drainage Services, Mr Adedapo Ajadi, said the initiative will significantly reduce flood risks and provide lasting relief to residents, public institutions and businesses across Lagos Mainland.

The project signals renewed commitment by the state to long-term flood control and urban resilience.
