Former Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (GRV), has once again challenged the long-held notion that Lagos belongs to a single political figure, stressing that the state’s leadership must be inclusive and accountable to all residents.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, Rhodes-Vivour declared:
“Lagos is home to everyone. The idea that Lagos belongs to one man and leadership has been controlled by the same person for over two decades is what I’m completely against.”
Opposition Parties Face Restrictions
GRV further highlighted the difficulties faced by opposition parties in Lagos, noting that restrictive security measures are often used to frustrate their gatherings.
“You have local government chairmen driving into communities with police escorts to stop opposition parties from even meeting. These parties are not violent — they simply want to provide an alternative vision of leadership,” he said.
Call for Shared Leadership
Rhodes-Vivour emphasised that true leadership must not be monopolised.
“Leadership should not be a monopoly. Lagos belongs to every resident, every voter, every young person seeking opportunity,” he added.
Push for Accountability
The former candidate also stressed the importance of accountability in governance:
“The people deserve leaders who listen, who provide solutions, and who create opportunities — not leaders who control everything from the top.”
His comments have reignited debates over political dominance, democracy, and inclusivity in Lagos State.
