The Labour Party (LP) has made it clear that no aspirant—including former presidential candidate Peter Obi—will receive an automatic ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections. LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, told Punchthat all candidates must emerge through a democratic convention.
Ifoh disclosed that Obi has had minimal interaction with the party’s current leadership for about a year, though the LP remains open to reconciliation with him and other aggrieved members. His comments come amid rising uncertainty about Obi’s political plans and the widening rift between him and the Julius Abure-led LP.
He stressed that the NEC has consistently maintained that ticket allocation will follow due process.
Regarding the recent NEC meeting, Ifoh explained that the session focused solely on kick-starting congresses and primaries, which have already begun in states like Ekiti, with Osun next. He added that the party is working closely with INEC as it prepares for 2027.
