Kwara Teachers Threaten Strike Over Unmet Welfare Demands

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has warned of an imminent statewide industrial action in Kwara State over the government’s persistent failure to address long-standing welfare demands.

In a letter to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the NUT condemned the non-implementation of the 27.5% Teachers Specific Allowance (TSA) and the National Harmonized Teachers Retirement Age Act, 2022—both of which over 25 states have already implemented.

The union noted that despite multiple engagements since 2023, teachers’ demands remain unattended, even though other sectors such as medical and judiciary workers have received consolidated salary approvals.

The NUT warned that teacher frustration has reached a breaking point and urged the governor to convene an emergency meeting before December 13, 2025, to avert a statewide shutdown of schools.
