Gunmen suspected to be terrorists have abducted the monarch of Aafin community in Kwara State, Oba S Y Olaonipekun, alongside one of his sons, during a violent attack on the royal palace. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening in Aafin Ile Ere, Ifelodun Local Government Area, throwing the community into panic.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed the palace, firing sporadically before forcing their way inside. During the invasion, the queen, Felicia Olaonipekun, was shot in the arm and later rushed to hospital, while the monarch and his son were taken away.
The attack reportedly happened during New Year gatherings, with several family members inside the palace. Local vigilantes were unable to confront the attackers due to inadequate manpower. The abduction has heightened fear in Kwara South, coming shortly after another traditional ruler in the area regained freedom from kidnappers.
