Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has received the 38 worshippers rescued after last Tuesday’s attack on a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, where gunmen abducted members and killed three during service.
The victims, attended to at the Government House clinic, appeared exhausted and distressed. One freed victim described their ordeal in the bandits’ camp as “harrowing,” noting that escaping their captors was nearly impossible. Medical staff provided drugs, water, and food, while the frail among them were moved into the hospital section.
A pastor of the church expressed gratitude to both federal and state authorities for securing the release of the worshippers. Governor Abdulrazaq, after interacting with some victims, said the development was not yet a moment for celebration, noting that many captives across Nigeria were still awaiting rescue. He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his intervention.
The state government announced the release of the 38 abductees but did not disclose details of how they were freed. The bandits initially demanded ₦3 billion ransom, later reducing it to ₦760 million. The attack led to protests by angry youths in the community.

President Tinubu, responding to the attack and other security issues, postponed scheduled trips to Johannesburg and Luanda to receive security briefings. He also ordered security agencies to track down the attackers.
Before the announcement of their release, CAC held its first service since the attack, with church leaders encouraging attendance as an act of faith. The presiding pastor, Bamidele Lawrence, likened the ordeal to biblical trials, assuring members that God had promised the captives would return alive.
