A Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) encounter between Katsina United and Barau FC descended into chaos and violence on Saturday, resulting in a Barau FC forward, Nana Abraham, sustaining a severe injury with a deep cut on his neck.
The disturbing incident occurred at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium moments after Barau FC’s Orji Kalu scored a 69th-minute equalizer to level the match at 1-1.
Confirming the attack in a live update on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Barau FC posted: “70’ The match is temporarily halted following an attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham.”
This post came just a minute after the club had jubilantly announced the goal that tied the game.
Trending photos from the scene showed a grim sight, with player Nana Abraham bleeding profusely from a visible gash on his neck as match officials and fellow players rushed to his aid amidst the unfolding chaos on the pitch.
The violent outbreak forced security operatives to intervene promptly, leading to a temporary suspension of the highly charged fixture.
