Kano State Bans Public Debates Among Islamic Praise Singers Amid Controversy

The Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board has officially banned all forms of public debates among praise singers of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in the state.

This decision follows a heated online debate between two prominent artists, Usman Mai Dubun Isa and Shehi Mai Tajul-Izzi, which surfaced just 24 hours prior. The board deemed the debate a direct violation of its operational guidelines.

Both singers, along with the organizers of the debate held on Monday, have been summoned by the board and instructed to appear within 24 hours.

On Tuesday, the Executive Secretary of the board, Abba El-Mustapha, announced that the decision was made to ensure peace, order, and strict compliance with existing regulations governing entertainers and religious performers in Kano.

In a statement issued by the board’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, El-Mustapha emphasized that “any form of religious debate in the state is now prohibited unless officially approved by the board.”

To further investigate the matter, the board has inaugurated a special investigative committee headed by its Director of Special Duties, Isah Abdullahi. All parties summoned have been directed to appear before the committee to provide explanations regarding the incident.

The board also warned that organizing religious debates without prior approval constitutes a breach of the law and could lead to serious penalties for those involved.

Reaffirming its mandate, the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board pledged to continue regulating the activities of entertainers in the state. It further appealed to the public to maintain peace and support its efforts in promoting cultural harmony and mutual understanding.
