Kano State has recorded the deaths of four hundred and sixty nine children due to malnutrition within six months, highlighting a worsening public health emergency. The disclosure was made by Professor Ruqayya Aliyu Yusuf of Bayero University Kano during a media training on behavioural change and nutrition.
She revealed that poor nutrition, poverty and limited health awareness continue to fuel child deaths, with Kano posting one of the highest rates of child malnutrition in Nigeria. UNICEF data shows that more than half of children under five in the state are stunted. Experts at the event warned that food insecurity and vitamin deficiencies are worsening child survival, urging urgent community based nutrition interventions to curb the Kano malnutrition crisis.
