Kano Politics: Uncertainty Trails Abba Yusuf’s APC Defection Plan

Uncertainty continues to surround the planned defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the NNPP to the APC as consultations and political pressure intensify. The move, initially expected in early January 2026 and later shifted to January 12, has again stalled amid opposition from his political mentor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Sources say the delay is linked to Governor Yusuf’s demand for an automatic 2027 ticket, a condition the APC leadership is yet to approve. The situation has been complicated by internal divisions within the NNPP, following a leadership crisis that weakened party unity in Kano.

While some lawmakers and party officials are reportedly backing the governor’s move, Kwankwaso’s loyalists insist remaining in NNPP offers a clearer path to re-election. With pressure mounting from both sides, the Abba Yusuf defection debate has become a major political talking point in Kano State.
