he National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released official sub-national GDP figures for Kano State, showing remarkable economic growth between 2019 and 2023.
According to the report, Kano State’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanded from ₦10.7 trillion in 2019 to ₦16.8 trillion in 2023, cementing the state’s position as one of Nigeria’s largest sub-national economies.
In a statement, Aliyu Isa Aliyu, Ph.D., Statistician-General of Kano State, reaffirmed the Bureau’s commitment to “supporting data-driven governance, which remains one of the top priorities of the administration of His Excellency, Governor Abba K Yusuf.”
Sectoral Breakdown of Kano’s Economy (2019 – 2023):
- Agriculture: Rose from ₦3.2 trillion in 2019 to ₦5.4 trillion in 2023.
- Industry: Grew modestly from ₦1.7 trillion to ₦2.4 trillion.
- Services: Made the biggest leap, surging from ₦5.8 trillion in 2019 to ₦9.0 trillion in 2023, making it the largest contributor to Kano’s economy.
The NBS explained that the sub-national GDP measurement exercise commenced in March 2025 in collaboration with state statistical agencies. The final figures have now been shared with the Kano State Bureau of Statistics.
To deepen the analysis, the Bureau has set up a technical committee of experts to review the findings. Members of the committee include:

- Dr. Yakubu Al-Amin (Yakson Al-amin Usman) – Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria

- Nazir Halliru – Director General, KAN-INVEST
The Bureau stated that official letters will be sent to committee members to outline their roles.
