Dumebi Kachikwu, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the last general election, has accused Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), of showing disrespect towards President Bola Tinubu.
During an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Kachikwu claimed that Yakubu delivered a parting ‘shot’ at Tinubu by recognizing the David Mark-led leadership of the ADC. He stated, “I knew that the INEC chairman would give the President a big middle finger to show his displeasure towards him.”
Kachikwu criticized Yakubu for making pronouncements about the ADC while several cases involving the party are still pending in court. His comments followed INEC’s recent endorsement of the David Mark-led ADC, which was published on the Commission’s portal.
Describing Yakubu as one of Nigeria’s biggest mistakes, Kachikwu expressed his lack of faith in the INEC Chairman’s ability to handle the situation. “I’m glad that he’s leaving, but we know that the court will ultimately decide,” he added.
He further elaborated, “I wasn’t expecting him to do anything otherwise. He waited just a few weeks before leaving so he could do it, and there’s no remorse.” Kachikwu lamented that the ADC and the Nigerian populace are the victims in this political struggle, stating, “When two elephants are fighting, the grass is the victim.”
