Jonathan Warns Against Compromised Judiciary as PDP Sets Conditions for 2027 Comeback

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has sounded a strong warning that the independence of the judiciary is non-negotiable, stressing that it remains the bedrock of democracy and a secure business environment.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Democracy Dialogue of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Accra, Ghana, Jonathan emphasized that no investor would risk funds in an economy where judges are compromised or influenced by political actors.

“It affects everybody. For example, no businessman can bring his money to invest in a country where the judiciary is compromised, where a government functionary can dictate to judges what judgment they will give. No man brings his money to invest in that economy because they are taking a big risk,” Jonathan stated.

He insisted that if Nigeria must secure its future, leaders must uphold justice and fairness regardless of personal or political interests.

“If we must build a nation for our children and grandchildren, no matter how painful it is, we must strive to do what is right,” he added.

PDP Reacts to Speculations on Jonathan’s 2027 Bid

Meanwhile, the Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has addressed growing speculations about Jonathan’s possible interest in the 2027 presidential race.

In a statement to Punch, the state chairman, Abraham Amah, clarified that while Jonathan has every right to contest, due process must be followed.

He emphasized that the party’s presidential flag bearer would emerge through a free, fair, and democratic convention, not unilateral endorsements.

“As a former President and a respected leader of the party, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan enjoys the constitutional right to contest for the party’s ticket if he so desires,” Amah said.

However, he noted that Jonathan is yet to formally present his manifesto or policy direction to the state chapter.

Amah also revealed that while some influential voices within the PDP see Jonathan as a strong contender, the final decision rests with party delegates at the convention.

“Our doors are open to all aspirants. Until such a time when all aspirants present their plans and the convention decides, the Abia PDP remains neutral,” he concluded.

The political climate now raises a crucial question: Will Jonathan make a historic return in 2027, or will PDP turn to a fresh face?
